Mineral Trioxide Aggregate Material Use in Endodontic Treatment: A Review of the Literature
Objective
The purpose of this paper was to review the composition, properties, biocompatibility, and the clinical results involving the use of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) materials in endodontic treatment. Methods
Electronic search of scientific papers from January 1990 to August 2006 was accomplished using PubMed and Scopus search engines (search terms: MTA, GMTA, WMTA, mineral AND trioxide AND aggregate). Results
Selected exclusion criteria resulted in 156 citations from the scientific, peer-reviewed dental literature. MTA materials are derived from a Portland cement parent compound and have been demonstrated to be biocompatible endodontic repair materials, with its biocompatible nature strongly suggested by its ability to form hydroxyappatite when exposed to physiologic solutions. With some exceptions, MTA materials provide better microleakage protection than traditional endodontic repair materials using dye, fluid filtration, and bacterial penetration leakage models. In both animal and human studies, MTA materials have been shown to have excellent potential as pulp-capping and pulpotomy medicaments but studies with long-term follow-up are limited. Preliminary studies suggested a favorable MTA material use as apical and furcation restorative materials as well as medicaments for apexogenesis and apexification treatments; however, long-term clinical studies are needed in these areas. Conclusion
MTA materials have been shown to have a biocompatible nature and have excellent potential in endodontic use. MTA materials are a refined Portland cement material and the substitution of Portland cement for MTA products is presently discouraged. Existing human studies involving MTA materials are very promising, however, insufficient randomized, double-blind clinical studies of sufficient duration exist involving MTA for all of its clinical indications. Further clinical studies are needed in these areas
Hinged Dissections Exist
We prove that any finite collection of polygons of equal area has a common
hinged dissection. That is, for any such collection of polygons there exists a
chain of polygons hinged at vertices that can be folded in the plane
continuously without self-intersection to form any polygon in the collection.
This result settles the open problem about the existence of hinged dissections
between pairs of polygons that goes back implicitly to 1864 and has been
studied extensively in the past ten years. Our result generalizes and indeed
builds upon the result from 1814 that polygons have common dissections (without
hinges). We also extend our common dissection result to edge-hinged dissections
of solid 3D polyhedra that have a common (unhinged) dissection, as determined
by Dehn's 1900 solution to Hilbert's Third Problem. Our proofs are
constructive, giving explicit algorithms in all cases. For a constant number of
planar polygons, both the number of pieces and running time required by our
construction are pseudopolynomial. This bound is the best possible, even for
unhinged dissections. Hinged dissections have possible applications to
reconfigurable robotics, programmable matter, and nanomanufacturing.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figure
Roaring high and low: composition and possible functions of the Iberian stag's vocal repertoire
We provide a detailed description of the rutting vocalisations of free-ranging male Iberian deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus, Hilzheimer 1909), a geographically isolated and morphologically differentiated subspecies of red deer Cervus elaphus. We combine spectrographic examinations, spectral analyses and automated classifications to identify different call types, and
compare the composition of the vocal repertoire with that of other red deer subspecies. Iberian stags give bouts of roars (and more rarely, short series of barks) that are typically composed of two different types of calls. Long Common Roars are mostly given at the beginning or at the end of the bout, and are characterised by a high fundamental frequency (F0) resulting in poorly defined formant frequencies but a relatively high amplitude. In contrast, Short Common Roars are typically given in the middle or at the end of the bout, and are characterised by a lower F0 resulting in relatively well defined vocal tract resonances, but low amplitude. While we did not identify entirely Harsh Roars (as described in the Scottish red
deer subspecies (Cervus elaphus scoticus), a small percentage of Long Common Roars contained segments of deterministic chaos. We suggest that the evolution of two clearly distinct types of Common Roars may reflect divergent selection pressures favouring either vocal efficiency in high pitched roars or the communication of body size in low-pitched, high spectral density roars highlighting vocal tract resonances. The clear divergence of the Iberian red deer vocal repertoire from those of other documented European red deer populations reinforces the status of this geographical variant as a distinct subspecies
WWGENPV 2.0 - A Monte Carlo Event Generator for Four-Fermion Production at e+ e- Colliders
The Monte Carlo program {\tt WWGENPV}, designed for computing distributions
and generating events for four-fermion production in collisions, is
described. The new version, 2.0, includes the full set of the electroweak (EW)
tree-level matrix elements for double- and single- production, initial- and
final-state photonic radiation including effects in the Structure
Function formalism, all the relevant non-QED corrections (Coulomb correction,
naive QCD, leading EW corrections). An hadronisation interface to {\tt JETSET}
is also provided. The program can be used in a three-fold way: as a Monte Carlo
integrator for weighted events, providing predictions for several observables
relevant for physics; as an adaptive integrator, giving predictions for
cross sections, energy and invariant mass losses with high numerical precision;
as an event generator for unweighted events, both at partonic and hadronic

A Self-Consistent Model for Positronium Formation from Helium Atoms
The differential and total cross sections for electron capture by positrons
from helium atoms are calculated using a first-order distorted wave theory
satisfying the Coulomb boundary conditions. In this formalism a parametric
potential is used to describe the electron screening in a consistent and
realistic manner. The present procedure is self consistent because (i) it
satisfies the correct boundary conditions and post-prior symmetry, and (ii) the
potential and the electron binding energies appearing in the transition
amplitude are consistent with the wave functions describing the collision
system. The results are compared with the other theories and with the available
experimental measurements. At the considered range of collision energies, the
results agree reasonably well with recent experiments and theories.

Hierarchical Hough all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in LIGO S5 data
We describe a new pipeline used to analyze the data from the fifth science
run (S5) of the LIGO detectors to search for continuous gravitational waves
from isolated spinning neutron stars. The method employed is based on the Hough
transform, which is a semi-coherent, computationally efficient, and robust
pattern recognition technique. The Hough transform is used to find signals in
the time-frequency plane of the data whose frequency evolution fits the pattern
produced by the Doppler shift imposed on the signal by the Earth's motion and
the pulsar's spin-down during the observation period. The main differences with
respect to previous Hough all-sky searches are described. These differences
include the use of a two-step hierarchical Hough search, analysis of
coincidences among the candidates produced in the first and second year of S5,

Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson with the OPAL Detector at LEP
This paper summarises the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in e+e-
collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV performed by the OPAL
Collaboration at LEP. The consistency of the data with the background
hypothesis and various Higgs boson mass hypotheses is examined. No indication
of a signal is found in the data and a lower bound of 112.7GeV/C^2 is obtained
on the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson at the 95% CL.Comment: 51 pages, 21 figure
microRNA-seq of cartilage reveals an over-abundance of miR-140-3p which contains functional isomiRs
miR-140 is selectively expressed in cartilage. Deletion of the entire Mir140 locus in mice results in growth retardation and early-onset osteoarthritis-like pathology; however, the relative contribution of miR-140-5p or miR-140-3p to the phenotype remains to be determined. An unbiased small RNA sequencing approach identified miR-140-3p as significantly more abundant (>10-fold) than miR-140-5p in human cartilage. Analysis of these data identified multiple miR-140-3p isomiRs differing from the miRBase annotation at both the 5' and 3' end, with >99% having one of two seed sequences (5' bases 2-8). Canonical (miR-140-3p.2) and shifted (miR-140-3p.1) seed isomiRs were overexpressed in chondrocytes and transcriptomics performed to identify targets. miR-140-3p.1 and miR-140-3p.2 significantly down-regulated 694 and 238 genes, respectively, of which only 162 genes were commonly down-regulated. IsomiR targets were validated using 3'UTR luciferase assays. miR-140-3p.1 targets were enriched within up-regulated genes in rib chondrocytes of Mir140- null mice and within down-regulated genes during human chondrogenesis. Finally, through imputing the expression of miR-140 from the expression of the host gene WWP2 in 124 previously published data sets, an inverse correlation with miR-140-3p.1 predicted targets was identified. Together these data suggest the novel seed containing isomiR miR-140- 3p.1 is more functional than original consensus miR-140-3p seed containing isomiR
Colour reconnection in e+e- -> W+W- at sqrt(s) = 189 - 209 GeV
The effects of the final state interaction phenomenon known as colour
reconnection are investigated at centre-of-mass energies in the range sqrt(s) ~
189-209 GeV using the OPAL detector at LEP. Colour reconnection is expected to
affect observables based on charged particles in hadronic decays of W+W-.
Measurements of inclusive charged particle multiplicities, and of their angular
distribution with respect to the four jet axes of the events, are used to test
models of colour reconnection. The data are found to exclude extreme scenarios
of the Sjostrand-Khoze Type I (SK-I) model and are compatible with other
models, both with and without colour reconnection effects. In the context of
the SK-I model, the best agreement with data is obtained for a reconnection
probability of 37%. Assuming no colour reconnection, the charged particle
multiplicity in hadronically decaying W bosons is measured to be (nqqch) =
